Rewind to October 2024.
My sister + her family are visiting from California and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have all of us get photos together.
We are all getting ready, and Griffin quietly asks me,
“Mom, when are we going to do a photo session where I can wear what I want?
I don’t feel like me.”
Griffin has always worn athletic clothing for as long as I can remember because he likes the feel. You won’t find a pair of jeans in his closet.
His question honestly threw me, as I’m going down the mental check list making sure we will all be out the door and arrive on time in a dress I bought just for the session.
A dress I will probably never wear again.
A dress that didn’t feel like me.
I just remember saying, “This will be the last time. I promise.”
We did the photo session and it went well. The photos are beautiful.
A beautiful grassy area by a lake, beautiful light, beautiful outfits, but Griffins right. While the smiles, laughter, and hugs are all real; they aren’t a true reflection of our family. They didn’t feel like us.
I started to really look at photos from previous family sessions we’ve done, and quickly realized my kids childhood is not in any of the photos.
What we enjoyed doing together, favorite toys, books we read on repeat, hours spent on the swing set in the backyard, none of that was there.
I truly believe with every cell of my being that this is what you really want photos of.
Your family.
Your home.
Doing everyday things together.
Where you end up with a true time capsule of this season of your life reflected back to you in your photos.
Because at the end of the day, you won’t remember your kids childhood in clothing you don’t typically wear in a random field at sunset, but you will remember their childhood in the activities you do daily ❤️.
This personal experience is a huge reason why I’ve created the time capsule session.
